One of my favourite bands in the world is one named McFly. I love them for many reasons: their music is catchy and fun to listen to, they play and write their own music, they are BRILLIANT live, they’re hot (imo anyway, haha) and because they’re named after a character in one of my favourite films ever, Back To The Future. I’ve been to see them 3 times (which is hardly anything really, as there are real hardcore fans who’ve seen them over 10 times) and have loved them obsessivly for just over a year now (however I’ve liked them since 2004 when they formed). They were signed to Universal Island Records, a label quite famous for producing pop acts and doing silly promotion in order to make more money during the early weeks of a single/album release. But it has been officially confirmed that McFly have left their label because they were fed up of this promotion, as it made them seem like a Westlife-kind of boyband. Westlife may like that image, but McFly, who are real musicians, certainly don’t. They may have in the early days, but now it’s just silly. Their music has matured from what it was 4 years ago.
We’ve known this for a while, but an article which was published quite recently made us all a bit.. worried. Apparently, according to The Mirror, they have turned down Island’s pleas for them to stay and instead made their own record label, supposedly called ‘Super Records’. (Please excuse me while I go and throw up. XD)
This could make or break their career, and although I’m happy for them being able to make their own decisions for once, I am very worried about where they’ll be this time next year. Working in McDonald’s, or still reeling in the cash and making the music they love? I certainly won’t want them to just completely flop; they’ve come too far now!
The boys were in Australia a few months ago recording their new album, without Island. So basically, they had to pay for it all themselves, and record the finishing touches in their own studio after coming back from Aus. The good thing about this all is that when they release the album on their own, they will get all the money - meaning that, if it sells as well as their first album did, then they’ll be so god damned rich they’ll probably be able to retire before any of them reaches 24. They’ll also be able to choose the singles to release, which may mean that for once we won’t have silly cover songs released and instead the true music will be revealed to the world.
They may also be able to SWEAR in their songs now, haha! Recent leaked lyrics suggest that, for the first time ever, the word ‘fuck’ is being used in one of their singles. The only other time that word has been used is in Dougie Poynter (bassist)’s song ‘Ignorance‘, in which the word was cut/bleeped out due to the fact that apparently ‘most McFly fans are under 10 years old and don’t like swearing’ (when in fact their fans are basically all over 15 years old and LOVE swearing xD) The only problem with this is that they’ll have to have the ‘explicit’ sticker on the front of their albums, meaning that any 10 year old fans’ parents may not let their kids listen to it. But do we really care? As long as they’re doing what they want, it doesn’t matter. Right?
Well, kinda. If sales go belly flop during the release of this album, I don’t think that they’ll be going on for much longer. I know for a fact that they won’t go back to Island, but they may have to resort to another label in order to get the sales rolling in again. It’s actually all quite scary for us Fly fans!
I just hope these kids know what they’re doing, that’s all. Not that we really believe tabloids, haha. I sure hope the whole ‘Super Records’ thing is a lie, although we wouldn’t be surprised if it was true (as one fan on the forum says: ‘”Jag super” means “I’m getting drunk” in Swedish. I bet that’s where they got it from.’)
Anyone else know of bands that have done something similar to this? How did they do - flop or succeed?
Ps: Quilt and Tradepost have been updated.
And I put one of my short stories up for people to read.. if anyone has any feedback on it, It’d be greatly appreciated.
