No one ever said I couldn’t post about Mcfly again.. meheh. =P
But yeah. A while ago I told you lot how my favourite band had supposedly left their record label and created their own. Well, since then it’s been confirmed many, many times, and with it has brought alot of weird changes to the ‘original’ McFly routine. Some good, some bad, some just pure amazing.
The first thing I’ll mention is their new song; it’s called One For The Radio, and while it isn’t the best produced or written song in the world, it certainly is brilliant. Some say the lyrics are bad, while others say the lyrics are some of the best they’ve done. I personally love the lyrics. A sample;
Put your fist on your chest,
Raise your voice in protest,
Singing “we don’t care”
So here’s another song for the radio,
And here’s another line from the heart,
So don’t pretend you hate us then you sing along,
Cause we all look the same in the dark.
The song itself deals with all the crap both the band and fans get for being who they are. McFly get slated because of the way they were first promoted - as a teenie bopping child’s band - and their fans get stick obviously for liking their music. I think really, what McFly are trying to say with this song is both “we’re McFly, we’re still here, [in reference to pop-bands not lasting more than a year] so fuck you all” (towards the critics) and for the fans to ignore what people say and continue to follow their musical heart. McFly aren’t bigheaded at all; if you don’t live in Britain amongst the chavs, you’ll never truly know how much they got slated while with Island Records. This song is both a statement and a hint into the real McFly and what they wanted to produce all along, but got forced not to by silly record company people.
The second thing is the album. If you remember back to the post I made a while ago, I said that they were thinking of doing a ‘Radiohead’ (in reference to the band) and releasing their new album for free/letting buyers choose what they want to pay for it. Well, that is half true. Going back to what I said about their routine now being really weird, I can say that they have teamed up with The Mail On Sunday (Britain’s Sunday paper) and will be releasing their album for FREE with it. That means all us fans will have to get up at the crack of dawn and run down to the corner shop in hope that all the copies haven’t been taken by elderly people.
I know what you’re thinking; “how ridiculous can they be?” I thought the same. However, why they’re doing this is for quite genuine reasons. It’s not that they just want to chuck their album away (because, lets face it, people WILL just chuck it away) but because they want to give people a chance to listen to their ‘real’ music in hope that some will like it and decide to go to one of their shows (because, lets face it, the REAL talent comes in the shape of their live performances, which are AWESOME). Just put it this way; The Mail On Sunday is bought by about 5 million people each Sunday. This means that 5 million people will have McFly’s new album in their hands. Around 500,000 of these people won’t give the album a chance, so will throw it away. Another 500,000, roughly, will already hate McFly and throw the album straight in the bin without a second thought. However, around about 2 million people will give this album a chance. That is a LOT of people, if you think that their first album went straight to number 1 with just 600,000 copies sold. There is only a small chance however that every single person will love the album, but still, at least the ‘new’ McFly will have been heard by many, many non-fans who won’t have been bothered to buy their album in the first place.
But that isn’t the end. Especially for the fans, McFly are giving something back in the shape of a deluxe album, which includes 4 more songs, a 32 page booklet (a typical McFly album includes around 12 pages) and a dvd which they filmed while in Australia recording their new material. I suppose you could call the free album a sampler, as the real magic will be brought with the deluxe edition released in September, after their second single. It’s also good news for all the foreign fans who wouldn’t have been able to get hold of the free edition, as The Mail On Sunday is certainly not a worldwide thing.
The third thing I’ll mention is the video for One For The Radio. It was directed by Sum 41’s drummer, and has quite a vintage feel to it, almost like a 1990’s punk video. It was filmed in Toronto, so literally, McFly flew out there, filmed the video, then came back again. In reference to their ‘past life’, they never hardly left the country because the record company was holding them back. The video being filmed so far away can also be a statement, saying to the fans that they are now free to do what the hell they want, when they want. That is just awesome, in my opinion.
The video storyline itself isn’t all that great, but I can’t complain really, as Mr Danny Jones looks mighty fine in it. ^_^ But I won’t spam yet another post with my spazzing over attractive men. Nor my obsession with Back To The Future, a film that if you watch the first part of the video, you’ll recognise a reference to it and it’s amazingness.
One thing I really noticed about the video is just how much fun they look to be having while performing. Yes, I know they couldn’t really have fun on their last single, as it was more of a slow song with a strong message, but still, it was SO nice to see them happy again after months of knowing that something was definitely wrong between them and their company. (if you don’t know what I’m on about with that, take their Greatest Hits album as an example; they were against releasing it after just 4 years, and that, amongst other things, made them realise that the record company wasn’t doing them any favours)
So, overall, new McFly = exciting. They’re touring at the end of the year so I will almost definitely be seeing them again. The good news aswell is that they’re beginning to tour other countries too - they’ve got a load of Brazil dates coming up soon, so that must be incredible for the Brazilian fans who’ve waited for 5 years to see them!
The full point in this blog is to literally say that I think everyone should give these guys a chance. They may not be the best band in the world, but the certainly are in the top 20, at least. They sing, they play their own instruments, they’re all young and rich with nice houses (seriously) and they deserve so much after the shitty reception they’ve received so far. If you ever have a chance to, look them up, listen to a few of their songs, and let me know what you think. You probably won’t be disappointed. ^_^

I’m sorry, but because I deleted all my previous posts, your comments will have to be moderated again. And, due to this, I will say what I said last time; feel free to leave me comments, no matter who you are. I LOVE seeing comments, and HATE seeing no comments. Even if it’s just a hi, I appreciate it. Truly, I do. If you have anything to say about my posts or just about anything in general, let me know. Kai? =]
